然而，封建帝制晚期和现代社会早期在东北边境这种传统的边境意识还很淡薄。二十世纪三十年代，东北开始出现移民现象，并由此产生了移民学。那时中国国势较弱，领土不完整，移民学的开拓者像F L 和 O L ,也因此忽视了国家对早期东北地区的发展所做的贡献。 循着早期这些有重大影响的研究，后来清朝时东北的移民学者们把这一移民现象称之为由于他们没落的政府遭到汉人的入侵，为了谋生而进行的自发性的大规模迁移。 然而，这些描述却忽视了汉人政府在造就这一移民地区本身所起到的作用。恰恰相反，这些移民的后代总是在庆祝他们的祖先生活在一个不受国家干扰的环境里。而这个移民的故事被一代代的家庭称颂为“赶着马车征服山脉”。
