解決邊境問題是許多國家都經歷過的，而中國政府解決這一問題的方法卻與它們不同，中國通過改革並最終把邊境地區與大陸融合在一起。盡管在其過程中必然存在著這些邊境地區最終會再次脫離祖國的風險，但是歷史上中國在一次次的邊境問題上都取得了很大的成功，像中國西南、西北邊境甚至還有台灣地區。中國能夠收復邊境地區很大程度上取決於中國政府在其中採取了積極靈活的態度。此外，中國政府在經濟上進一步加強對邊境地區的財政支持，定期地向國家周邊邊境地區提供財政支持，這是具有中國特色的政府機制。
然而，封建帝制晚期和現代社會早期在東北邊境這種傳統的邊境意識還很淡薄。二十世紀三十年代，東北開始出現移民現象，並由此產生了移民學。那時中國國勢較弱，領土不完整，移民學的開拓者像F L 和 O L ,也因此忽視了國家對早期東北地區的發展所做的貢獻。 循著早期這些有重大影響的研究，後來清朝時東北的移民學者們把這一移民現象稱之為由於他們沒落的政府遭到漢人的入侵，為了謀生而進行的自發性的大規模遷移。 然而，這些描述卻忽視了漢人政府在造就這一移民地區本身所起到的作用。恰恰相反，這些移民的後代總是在慶祝他們的祖先生活在一個不受國家干擾的環境里。而這個移民的故事被一代代的家庭稱頌為「趕著馬車征服山脈」。
